SAO PAULO Maury Wills Authentic Jersey , Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- Three police officers in Brazil are under investigation after a protester was shot during an anti-World Cup protest in Sao Paulo on Saturday.

Fabricio Proteus Nunes Fonseca Mendonca Chaves, 22, is in a serious condition at the Santa Casa hospital's intensive care unit with bullet wounds in the neck and groin, O Globo reported.

Sao Paulo's public defender's office has requested an immediate probe by the state's security secretariat (SSP) and the internal affairs department of the military police.

"According to what I have been told, the police acted with absolute excess, disproportionate to the situation," said Carlos Weis, a human rights spokesman for public defender's office.

"It's important to put into context that the young man had participated in the demonstration," he said.

According to a SSP statement, Chaves was found to be carrying an "explosive object" after being stopped and searched by the officers.

He then tried to run away before producing a knife from his pocket.

"At that moment the police shot at the suspect, who fell to the ground, then rose in an effort to escape again before collapsing," the statement said.

Meanwhile more than 100 people arrested during Saturday's protest in Sao Paulo were released from police custody on Sunday.

The rally, which drew an estimated 2,500 participants, turned violent when a group of masked attackers clashed with police.

Others vandalized banks and shops while a private vehicle was torched.

It was one of a series of anti-World Cup protests planned by activist group Anonymous, continuing nationwide rallies that began during the Confederations Cup last June.

Marchers on Saturday carried signs saying "FIFA go home" and "Wake up Brazil", in reference to the huge cost of staging the June 12-July 13 event.

Many Brazilians are angry that hundreds of millions of dollars are being spent on stadiums instead of improving the poor state of education, health and transport.

Rallies were also held Saturday in Rio de Janeiro, Goiania and Brasilia.

Brazil's ongoing civil unrest has been the cause of concern for world football's governing body FIFA.

Last year FIFA president Sepp Blatter said the Confederations Cup protests were like "alarm bells" for the government ahead of the World Cup.

Scalpers are trying to cash in on Chinese consumers who eagerly want a battery replacement for their iPhone 6s, says the Beijing Morning Post.

Apple is offering free battery replacements for iPhone 6s users, but it is a lengthy process and difficult to make reservations in cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.

"I came to try my luck, though I heard it was almost impossible to get the battery replaced by lining up," a man surnamed Wang said outside Apple's flagship store in Beijing's Sanlitun area.

"Long queues are common in front of all Apple stores in Beijing," a security guard said.

Not everyone has the patience to line up, however, and where there is profit, there are scalpers. And this time, the scalpers are using the internet.

By typing "reservation" into the search boxes of some e-commerce platforms, up to 100 items are displayed, claiming that they help iPhone 6s customers get new batteries.

The prices range from 10 yuan ($1.5) to 100 yuan, depending on the cities. But even after purchasing the reservations online, customers must still wait two or three days.

Apple's customer service advises iPhone 6s users to avoid rush hours for battery replacements, but customers are unclear about when rush hours occur.

The ancient city of Nice on the French Riviera, sandwiched between Cannes and Antibes to the west and the principality of Monaco to the east, is a year-round resort and thriving commercial center. It is a city famous for many things, perhaps the most illustrious being the carnival that has taken place in February each year since the Middle Ages.

The most widely-believed origin of the word "carnival" is from the old Italian "carne levare", meaning "away with meat". By the Middle Ages, the people of Nice, before fasting forty days, as appropriate for the Catholic tradition of Lent, enjoyed rich and plentiful dining.

To enjoy this time of festivity even more, every excess was permitted. It was also a time for making fun of everything and everybody at everyone's expense. This involved the elaborate charade of concealment behind masks and disguises until Mardi Gras.

The first reference to a carnival in Nice in the history books dates back to 1294 when Charles d'Anjou, Count of Provence, mentions having spent "some joyous days of carnival" in the city. But In the 17th century excesses were brought under control by the "Abb锟絪 des Fous" whose role was to regulate the population. At this time, under the influence of the famous Venice Carnival, balls become more common that street entertainment.

During the major political upheavals during France's eventful history, such as the French revolution or the first empire, the carnival was put on hold temporarily.

However, the first carnival parade, which is typical of the modern carnival, was inaugurated in 1830 in honor of Charles Felix and Marie-Christine, sovereigns of the Piedmont Sardinia Kingdom. The parade involved a display of thirty carriages before the king and Queen to announce the start of the carnival.

The carnival in the form we know it today was started in 1873, with the founding of the "Festival Committee" which would organize the carnival and massively increase it in size under the patronage of the city's governors. Now parades and floats, paying stands and a more organized event made their appearance.
